We're very excited about a couple of very special performances we have coming up in the next couple of months. We'll be performing as a string quartet to launch the Concertini Family concerts at Norden Farm on Tueday April 5th at 2:00. We've based our programme on the welcome appearance of Spring so lots of lively music for little ones to move around to and for parents to enjoy. CONCERTINI is a series of classical music recitals for young children and parents and allows children and babies to listen and interact with live music, in a fun and relaxed environment full of musical inspiration

In May the Akina String Duo will be performing at Ufton Court for the 'capturing the wild inside' wedding fair. Which will be held on Sunday 8th May, from 11am-3pm at Ufton Court. Ufton is a superb venue and we are looking forward to playing there once again.

Book us Early

We are taking bookings for 2016/17 now. Popular dates go quickly particularly those over the summer so once you have decided on the type of music group you would like book as soon as possible. To book the Akina String quartet you need to return the booking form we will send you along with a non refundable deposit of £75.00, once we have this we will reserve your date in our diaries. in the run up to your event once details and timings have been finalised we will issue contracts with all details of the booking on so you know what to expect from us.

Can we hear you?

Yes, we have professionally recorded sound samples on our website, so you can listen to these. We do occasionally appear at wedding showcases which we publicise via our facebook and twitter pages. Unfortunately as the majority of our bookings are private events it isn't normally possible to pop in and listen to us.

We also have a youtube channel

How much do you cost?

We don't publish our fees online as each event is different. As a guide our fees for performing at a wedding start from £375.00 for a duo and £540.00 for our quartet. Please contact us directly for an accurate quote for your event. We do occasionally offer discounted dates so can sometimes accommodate short notice engagements so please get in touch if you have a last minute booking.

Appropriate music

We have a large selection of string quartet repertoire ranging from classical through to pop arrangements. Think carefully about the type of music you would like to hear at your event - we are more than happy to advise on this! We love to hear about any specific requests and can also offer an arrangement service for appropriate music for a small fee.

Create an ambience

Tying in with selection of music think carefully about the type of mood you would like to create - upbeat and lively? Calming? Stately?! it's upto you.

Registrar or minister approval

For weddings you will always have to get your music approved by the registrar or minister, and remember no religious music is allowed in civil marriage ceremonies, so always check the background of the piece.

On the day itself:

- position of the group

to perform we need for armless chairs (or two for a duo) these should occupy a space of at least three by two metres and should not be joined together. Remember if we need to move location this will take time and help is always gratefully received as we have quit a lot of stuff!

- playing outside

When playing outside we need to be protected from the elements. Our instruments are old and valuable and are easily damaged by strong sunlight so shade (gazebos are fantastic) is a must. Windy conditions are a problem as our sheet music tends to blow around so a sheltered spot is always preferable. Obviously we are unable to perform in damp conditions

- breaks

for every hour of playing we require a 10 minute break if you can provide us with a schedule then we try wherever possible to take these breaks at a convenient time so that the mood of the event isn't disturbed.

Payment

- our preferred method of payment is before the day via bacs. We do accept payment by cash on the day, in which case we advise entrusting the payment with your best man.

Here in the Akina Office we get lots of enquiries from couples planning their weddings asking for some tips about suitable music for their wedding ceremonies so we've put together a short guide which should hopefully be useful:

Typically music features in four parts of the wedding ceremony

1. whilst the guests are assembling before the ceremony begins

2. for the entrance of the Bride (Processional)

3. The signing of the registers

4. The exit of the Bridal Party (Recessional)

1. Whilst the guests are assembling beginning around 30 minutes before the ceremony itself is due to start we typically play a selection of classical pieces including Bach 'Air', A selection from Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons' and a Mozart selection.

2. Entrance of the Bride (the couple need to select one piece for this point in the ceremony)

Suggestions:

Pachelbel Canon

Schubert Ave Maria

Charpentier Te Deum

Clarke Trumpet Tune

Wagner Bridal Chorus

Desiree Kissing You (Romeo & Juliet)

3. Signing of Registers choose one or two pieces

Bach Air on G

Debussy Girl with the Flaxen Hair

Delibes Flower Duet

Franck Panis Angelicus

Handel Ombra Ma Fu

Pachelbel Canon

Puccini Nessun Dorma

Schubert Ave Maria

Vivaldi 'Four Seasons' selection

Spring

Autumn

Sherwin A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square

Gershwin Summertime

Desiree Kissing You (Romeo & Juliet)

Ungar Ashokan Farewell (The Civil War)

4. Exit of the Couple (one piece)

Mendelssohn Wedding March

Clarke Trumpet Tune

Handel La Rejouissance

Handel Arrival of the Queen of Sheba

Brandenburg Concerto in G

Clarke Trumpet Voluntary/Prince of Denmark's March

A booking of one and a half hours should cover the duration of a wedding ceremony. We also provide lively music for drinks receptions and background music for the following wedding breakfast.

We were very excited to visit the lovely Bijou Weddings venue Silchester House last Saturday and to return Danesfield House. Silchester House is an intimate venue we were asked to play Pachelbel for the Bridal entry, Kissing you by Des'ree for the Signing of the registers and the ever popular Queen of Sheba for the Recessional. We loved the Dinosaur reading by Edward Monkton that had been picked for the ceremony.

We then played a outside under the shelter of the gazebo whilst guests enjoyed their champagne.

At Danesifeld we performed for the wedding breakfast in the Beautiful Versailles Suite as a string duo, following on from our string quartet performing for the wedding ceremony earlier that day in Beaconsfield.

We had the pleasure of being invited to perform for the Hamstead Norreys FreeFest last night and we had a great time. One of our regular players Jude lives in the village and we were thrilled to be asked to play.

It was a bit more informal than recent gigs we played on a stage for residents in the garden of the gorgeous White Heart Pub. Keen to relive some of the more upbeat repertoire we have added to our music selection recently we treated listeners to some jazz, pop, rock and of course classical music. We were looked after brilliantly and can highly reccommend the food in the White Heart!
